KLS PurePrint validates its assessment and prioritisation of impacts on nature
KLS PurePrint has had the first two steps of the Science Based Targets Network process, Step 1: Assess and Step 2: Prioritize, validated.
As published on the SBTN Target Tracker, KLS PurePrint has completed a materiality assessment and prioritization of its impacts on nature as part of the SBTN framework, using the technical guidance in Steps 1 & 2 v1.1. The work has been validated with the Accountability Accelerator.
This means that KLS can now document where across its own operations and value chain its most significant impacts on nature occur, and where it makes most sense to prioritize action first to enhance a better biodiversity in the value chain we offer our customers.
This is an important step towards setting science-based targets for nature and a major milestone for KLS PurePrint.
“We are very proud to have reached this milestone. Nature matters deeply to us at KLS, and working to understand and reduce our impact is something we take very seriously. For us, this is not just about documentation; it is about building a solid foundation for prioritizing the right actions and taking the next steps in a credible way to make our printing and packaging material even more environmentally friendly,” says Janni Toft Nielsen, CEO of KLS PurePrint.
The assessment shows that KLS’ biggest impacts on nature are water use, water pollution and soil pollution in direct operations, and water use, water pollution, GHG emissions, land use and land use change in the value chain. In Step 2: Prioritize, KLS achieved very high traceability for water-related data, with 99% subnational traceability for both water use and water pollution. Priority locations include Denmark in direct operations and, among others, Slovakia, Austria, Sweden and the UK in the value chain.
Joins Arla Foods and Novo Nordisk
KLS PurePrint has also publicly disclosed its validated progress, joining a small group of companies to do so. The group includes major international companies such as Arla Foods, Novo Nordisk and H&M Group, and KLS therefore becomes a strong example of how smaller companies can also engage with SBTN.
“By validating its science-based materiality assessment and prioritization, KLS PurePrint shows that smaller companies can make credible progress on the journey to science-based targets for nature. This validated milestone gives KLS a clear foundation for identifying where impacts are greatest, prioritizing the right next steps, and reinforcing credibility with customers and other stakeholders,” said SBTN CEO Erin Billman.
What is the Science Based Targets Network?
The Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) is the initiative behind science-based targets for nature, developing the methods and guidance companies use to assess, prioritize, and act on their impacts on nature. This includes areas such as biodiversity, freshwater and land use. The network builds on the same science-based logic that has helped companies set climate targets through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

In its first phase, SBTN worked with 17 pilot companies to develop the framework for science-based targets for nature. In the next phase, KLS PurePrint and around 150 other companies from around the world helped test and further refine the methodology. KLS has now had its materiality assessment and prioritization work in Steps 1 and 2 validated and publicly disclosed through SBTN.
